Women have, and still do, play an essential role as healers within their respective communities. A variety of cultures celebrate these female healers. For example, an indigenous tribe in South America worships the Earth Mother. This tendency and gravitation toward wise women may be due to their nurturing nature. They themselves are mothers and better understand the medicinal and spiritual needs of their communities. They may not use traditional medicine, instead they heal with love, empathy, and wholistic healing.
