What Is a Food Co-op?

What Is a Food Co-op?

July 31, 2022 By Paul

Unlike traditional supermarkets or grocery stores which may be owned by corporations, food co-ops are owned by the community. This shared ownership allows food co-ops to charge reasonable prices and tailor their product selection to the needs of the community. These food co-ops often source produce from local farmers and focus on high-quality, healthy products. By joining a food co-op, members have more of a say in how they purchase their food and gain a sense of community. To find the closest food co-op to you, just perform a quick search online.

Key Takeaways:

  • Food Co-ops are community based programs that help local growers. People save money.
  • Foods Co-ops look like grocery stores and are controlled by members. Members even get dividends of profits.
  • Co-ops buy from local growers more than stores (20% vs. 6%) but also have more SOURCES than a typical grocery store.

“This tradition of pushing the envelope by bringing values into commerce continues today in the co-op movement.”
