Strong Mind. Strong Body: The Psychology of Self-Defense

March 10, 2022 By Paul

Prentiss Rhodes is an NASM Master Instructor who specializes in multiple martial arts disciplines. Angie Miller welcomes her as a guest on “Strong Mind. Strong Body.”. Rhodes was picked on a lot when young, so she learned martial arts as a way to stand up for herself and to give herself power. For self-defense, she stresses the importance of standing tall and having situational awareness. Rhodes warns people to put their devices away when walking in a dangerous area, although speaking with someone on the phone is acceptable. She further talks about knowing when to de-escalate a situation. If you know how to defend yourself, you have to learn how to walk away when you have the upper hand. Otherwise, you may find yourself in trouble with the law.

Key Takeaways:

  • Prentiss used to get picked and bullied, so she learned martial arts to protect herself and gain power.
  • When waking in a dangerous area, Prentiss emphasizes staying in a well lit area, looking ahead, and putting your devices aside.
  • The number one thing is to stand tall and not cower or make yourself look small.

“Prentiss is a martial arts specialist in multiple disciplines, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, and Krav Maga.”
