Is Granola Good for You?

August 12, 2022 By Paul Leave a Comment

Although it made an appearance at Woodstock, granola was not invented by hippies. In fact, its roots are in the 19th century clean living movement championed by people such as John Harvey Kellogg. Granola is a relatively less processed breakfast cereal. However, it isn’t always healthy. Some commercial brands have a lot of sugar and refined oils. Healthier brands include Purely Elizabeth, Go Raw, and Lark Ellen Farm. The best granola, however, is made at home with rolled oats, nuts or seeds, and a liquid (often oil). Possible additions include maple syrup, dark chocolate chips, dried fruit, vanilla or cinnamon. After mixing, it is baked in a 350? oven and can be stored for up to a month.

Key Takeaways:

  • Granola began in the middle of the 20th century as a way to promote clean eating.
  • Granola consists of dry unprocessed cereal grains with additions like nuts or dried fruit.
  • Granola can be very healthy if it’s from certain brands, but the best tends to be homemade.

“Early versions of granola were combinations of processed and whole grains like oats and wheat, but the granola that’s associated with the 1960s includes nuts and seeds, and sometimes sweet extras like coconut shreds and dried fruit.”
