Are Cashews Healthy, Ethical, or Sustainable?

September 8, 2022 By Paul Leave a Comment

Cashews are expensive, but a lot goes into processing them. They come from cashew trees and aren’t really nuts. They’re actually drupe seeds that grow on the bottom of cashew apples. Once picked and processed, cashews are a good source of protein and are high in fat (both saturated and unsaturated). They also contain many key vitamins and minerals. Research suggests eating cashews can benefit both heart and bone health. In addition, their tryptophan content may slow cognitive decline and function as an antidepressant. But some people suffer from cashew allergies. In terms of sustainability, you can buy organic and fair trade cashews. The. biggest concern is that cashew shells are toxic, so the harvesting process is tough on workers.

Key Takeaways:

  • Cashews are tasy and versatile, but there are some ethical concerns with their production as well.
  • Cashews are a drupe that can help benefit your cardiovascular health, bone health, and more.
  • Cashews are fairly sustainable, but unfortunately they are produced in ethically murky circumstances.

“When you go to the grocery store and see a bag of cashews going for around $15 a pound or more, you might also resent the high price.”
