Ketone bodies can be used as fuel for the brain and other tissues. Furthermore, exogenous ketones may elevate blood ketone levels and provide various benefits, although their mechanism is mostly unknown. The evidence is that adenosine plays a neuro-protective role, and that ketosis may increase the concentration of adenosine. In our research, we investigated the role of A1Rs and A2ARs cell surface receptors while looking at epileptic seizures. We found that A1Rs, not A2ARs, mediate the benefits of exogenous ketone-supplemented food. However, further research is needed.
Key Takeaways:
- The healthful affects of ketone bodies is likely the result of downstream adenosine production.
- Ketone bodies, dietary related and exogenous, have long been effective for treating epilepsy, greatly reducing seizures.
- There is considerable promise that further studies will reveal many therapeutic uses for ketone bodies.
“It was suggested that exogenous ketone-induced ketosis can attenuate inflammatory processes, including neuroinflammation, including LPS-induced inflammation.”
