Eat the Rainbow: Why Is it Important to Eat a Colorful Variety of Fruits and Vegetables?

June 2, 2022 By Paul

One of the most important things that we can do in our diet is to make sure that we get a good amount of fruit and vegetables. The reason that fruits and vegetables are so colorful is because they have phytonutrients in them which help protect them from germs, bugs and the sun. Most Americans don’t get the range of colorful foods they need as most don’t get anywhere near enough fruit or vegetables in their diet in general. By eating these foods, we can reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Key Takeaways:

  • Even though we all have our favorite vegetables it is important to eat a variety of different nutrients, our bodies thrive on them.
  • Each color of fruit and vegetables has an abundance of specific nutrients. Phytonutrients created by the colors protect them from bugs, germs and the sun.
  • Red foods for instance help us fight cancer! Tomatoes and watermelons have lycopene in them that reduces the risk for prostate cancer. Beets help improve circulation and reduce heart disease.

“Eating a diversity of colorful foods can be an easy way to get the complete range of nutrients your body needs to thrive.”
