Dietitian vs Nutritionist: What’s the difference? | AIPT

October 8, 2022 By Paul

Nutritionists and dietitians both provide nutrition advice to clients. Dietitians are, in fact, a type of nutritionist. Becoming a nutritionist doesn’t require special accreditation or qualifications. Many people, such as fitness professionals, simply take a course in nutrition to help them with their jobs. Dietitians, on the other hand, face stricter criteria. They are accredited and recognized by national organizations, and usually required to continue updating their knowledge throughout their lives. Both nutritionists and dietitians can work in a range of fields, but dietitians can also find work in private clinical practices and hospitals. They often work with people with diabetes, allergies, or other sensitive medical conditions. Dietitians reach higher salary tiers than nutritionists.

Key Takeaways:

  • A dietitian is a type of nutritionist who, unlike many nutritionists, is accredited.
  • Nutritionist courses can be as short as six weeks and are often taken as part of a broader offering.
  • Both work with a range of clients, but dietitians may also work in private clinical practice or in a hospital.

“This can include basic nutrition advice for individuals, advice to public health bodies and private organisations, and contributing to community health programs through policy input.”
