The Dietary Guidelines for Americans stress the importance of replacing saturated fats with good fats. Avocados contribute 6 grams of unsaturated fat per serving, are low in saturated fats, and are free of cholesterol, sugar and sodium. Furthermore, they contain vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Although they only have 80 calories per serving, avocados are rich in dietary fiber that creates a feeling a fullness. Each 50-gram serving of avocado contains 250mg of potassium and 38 milligrams of beta-sitosterol. Eating avocados can help you meet the recommendations of the American Heart Association.

Key Takeaways:

  • Avocados are mostly water and fiber, and have no cholesterol, sugar or sodium.
  • Per serving, avocados contain 6 grams of unsaturated fat and 80 calories.
  • Per 50-gram serving, avocados contain 250mg of potassium and 38 milligrams of beta-sitosterol.

“Additionally, the Guidelines recommend choosing a variety of nutrient-dense foods from all food groups.”
