What Is Functional Nutrition?

What Is Functional Nutrition?

October 26, 2022 By Paul

Functional nutrition is an approach to eating that takes lifestyles into account when making food choices – things like activity levels, chronic illness, and other environmental factors. And while functional nutrition still looks at basic nutritional facts, it does it within the context of the other factors. One advantage of functional nutrition, is that it takes a person’s individual needs into account, rather than just putting everyone under the same umbrella. One disadvantage, is that ultimately your individual recommendations could cost more than standard nutritional recommendations.

Key Takeaways:

  • Functional nutrition differs from standard nutrition in that it is holistic, taking into account things like activity levels and environment.
  • Functional nutrition treats food as medicine, emphasizing real, whole foods and their effect on the gut microbiome.
  • Personal relationships, stress levels, and sleep habits all influence how the body processes food.

“Your bio-individuality determines your nutritional needs from one day to the next and during different phases of your life.”
