Probiotics vs. Antibiotics for Autism

Probiotics vs. Antibiotics for Autism

November 1, 2022 By Paul

Throughout nature, there are examples of intestinal microbes changing the behavior of the host. One example is an intestinal microbe that affects rodents – it makes the rodent passive to bobcat urine, and they lose their fear of it. This is important, because they are losing their fear of a predator, and won’t leave when they smell their scent. This alteration of behavior can also affect humans, and cause autism. People with autism do have altered microbes in their digestive systems.

Key Takeaways:

  • One particular intestinal microbe can cause rodents to lose their fear of bobcat urine, which is dangerous, because that is how the sense a predator.
  • There are some things that can increase the chance of autism during pregnancy, such as not developing to a higher birth weight.
  • Babies that are born through a Cesarean section under general anesthesia can have a higher likelihood of having autism.

“Given the potential power of microbes to affect behavior, might the disruption of our gut microbiome, our good gut bacteria, be a potential factor in the causation of autism?”
