The ketogenic diet is known to offer many health benefits for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as conditions including diabetes and epilepsy. Additionally, this list may also include mental disorders now as well. A journal review was recently published by researchers at Oxford University on how the ketogenic diet could help treat mental illnesses. They used both animal models and human trials to determine the effects of this diet on mental illnesses. Of course, more research is needed in order to determine the impact of the diet on mental illnesses, but these researchers at least offer some primary data that allows some kind of understanding of the relationship.
Key Takeaways:
- Many psychiatric illnesses share several underlying mechanisms that may be addressed with a ketogenic diet.
- Glucose hypometabolism, neurotransmitter imbalances, oxidative stress, and Inflammation are the four shared mechanisms.
- Two case series show significant clinical improvement can be attained with a ketogenic diet.
